Over 150 participants at the industry days in Travbyen

There is considerable interest in Travbyen – including from within the construction industry itself. At the first of two industry days on 30 April, KIRKBI opened the doors to Travbyen and invited the industry inside for a behind-the-scenes look at one of Denmark’s most ambitious urban development projects. The next industry day takes place on 7 May, and there are still places available.

More than 150 participants from across the construction industry turned up to experience the Travbyen project up close.

The day featured guided tours of the construction site, professional discussions and the opportunity to get a close-up look at the solutions, methods and considerations that characterise the development of Travbyen.

In other words: a look ‘under the bonnet’ at a project that is not merely about building a new neighbourhood – but about how to continuously develop the city in a significant way, in line with both legal and industry climate requirements – on a large scale, and with play as a fundamental design principle and expression.

“We are really pleased with the large turnout, and I sense a genuine interest and curiosity in the way we are developing. It confirms to us that there is a real desire and need to come together across sectors and share experiences,” says Christian Nørgaard, Project Director at KIRKBI.

Appreciating knowledge-sharing and openness

Torsten Sack-Nielsen, Head of Research and Senior Lecturer at Via University College, was one of the visitors at the industry day:

“It has been a fantastic experience – and a unique opportunity to see the construction site whilst work is still underway and to hear about all the ambitions for Travbyen. There are truly many inspiring ideas and solutions when it comes to building in a very climate-friendly and biogenic way. The courage to allow room for failure and learning on selected ‘ test buildings’ is unique. It is exemplary and visionary that Travbyen has that courage – and at the same time shares that knowledge with the industry,” he says.

“It was fantastic to feel the atmosphere and meet the driving forces behind the project. And it’s also inspiring when a client dares to think bigger – and generously shares their experiences,” says Dorte Jepsdatter Gram, an architect at Pluskontoret Arkitekter, who also took part.

“I love the fact that they’re taking unconventional materials and trying to make them conventional. It’s really interesting that they’re testing and investigating what works and what doesn’t as the process unfolds – and are open about the whole thing,” says Troels Meldgaard, technical consultant at BAYO.S Skruefundamenter

Places still available for the next site visit

With the first industry day successfully completed, we have taken another step forward in our efforts to share and disseminate the knowledge and solutions being developed within the project:

“We also have a responsibility to share the knowledge we are generating in Travbyen with the rest of the industry. I think we succeeded in doing that at the first site visit – and we look forward to doing it again on 7 May, when we hope to see just as many curious colleagues from the industry,” concludes Christian Nørgaard.

There are still places available for the next industry day, which takes place on 7 May. Register here:
