Urban development
for people, with nature
Travbyen is an ambitious urban development project. We want to show residents, industry and decision-makers how to continuously develop cities in line with the strictest climate requirements imposed by both legislation and the industry – on a large scale and without compromising on function and architecture. With Travbyen, KIRKBI will contribute to a green transition in construction – and make knowledge and data freely available to the entire construction industry.
Our ambition is to push construction in a more sustainable direction and create a place that makes people want to explore, meet and be part of the community.
We cannot do this alone. We are collaborating with some of the country's most talented architects, engineers and craftsmen, developing Travbyen stage by stage over a number of years.
On this page, you can read more about the construction: how we build, how much we build, and how we create vibrant and playful urban spaces with respect for both people and nature.

Frequently asked questions
-
What is the overall purpose of the Travbyen project?
Travbyen will demonstrate how to develop an entire neighborhood on a large scale with a significantly lower climate footprint—without compromising on quality, safety, or aesthetics.
At the same time, the project aims to inspire the construction industry to reduce its carbon footprint through new materials, enhanced biodiversity, and social communities, and to create a place where play and diversity thrive. -
Why are you building an entire neighborhood in Billund?
Travbyen is a concrete response to the need for more and more modern housing in Billund – and a contribution to the town's development as the Children's Capital.
By developing the area around the former trotting track, we are creating new homes, new connections in the city, and a large, green communal area that invites play, learning, and community.
The project also serves as an innovation platform that can inspire future construction projects in Denmark.
-
Is Travbyen different from so many other new developments?
Yes. Travbyen has been developed with the very ambitious goal of achieving a significantly lower climate footprint on a large scale.
The first phase achieves 4.5 kg CO₂e/m²/year (BR25 method) – significantly below both legal requirements and the industry's own reduction targets.
At the same time, we are working broadly with sustainability: biodiversity, social communities, playful urban spaces and a human scale in architecture.
-
How do you work with climate and CO₂ reduction?
Travbyen is working to set new standards for environmental sustainability in new construction. We use more sustainable materials, new construction methods and have a clear goal of continuously reducing our climate footprint at all stages.
The first phase is 4.5 kg CO₂e/m²/year (BR25), which is significantly below legal requirements and Reduction Roadmap 2.0.
